Who Should Not Do EMDR?
Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is not for everyone.
You should NOT do EMDR if:
You’re looking for quick tips or surface-level coping strategies
You want to stay in analysis without changing anything
You’re not ready to engage in deeper work
You have a medical or neurological condition that makes EMDR unsafe - please seek advisement from medical professionals if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, have a history of seizure or traumatic brain injury, or any other chronic medical condition before seeking EMDR treatment.
You’re not in a safe enough environment outside of sessions (or during EMDR for that matter)
You’re not prepared to manage the risks of EMDR which can include abreactions (unexpected and intense emotional or physical reactions during reprocessing of traumatic events) potential re-traumatization, and potential worsening symptoms.
That’s not a judgment — it just means this approach won’t feel like a fit
It is important to make sure you understand the potential risks of any medical or mental health treatment before trying it yourself. Nothing is 100% safe and free from risk. Make sure you are making an informed decision.
